JIJ was the first Israeli organization to bring forensic and eyewitness testimony of the October 7th atrocities to UN Headquarters in Geneva. On December 5, 2023, we arranged a delegation of first responders, who personally handled the bodies of victims, to meet with senior UN officials. Together, we presented a searing report that painstakingly catalogued Hamas’ war crimes and genocidal campaign of violence against Israelis: intentional targeting of civilians, home invasions, hostage-taking, sexual violence, and indiscriminate rocket fire. 3 months later, we convened a gathering of diplomats from 40 countries to hear survivor testimony and a legal analysis of Hamas’ genocide. These meetings directly challenged the UN’s indifference to the plight of Israeli civilians, and triggered high level investigations, leading the UN to finally recognize Hamas as a perpetrator of mass sexual violence.
The UN still hasn’t designated Hamas as a terrorist organization. Instead, it keeps Hamas militants on its payroll, and ignores their tunnel network, their abuse of Gazan civilians, indoctrination and recruitment of child soldiers. JIJ responded by rallying a bipartisan group of 34 U.S. Senators to demand that the UN recognize Hamas as a terror organization. We have also exposed ties between Hamas and the UN agency UNRWA, including staff implicated in the October 7 attacks and the captivity of Israeli hostages, and pressed major donors, like the European Union, to cut UNRWA’s funding. Beyond the UN system, JIJ led a global coalition of 50 organizations pressing the International Committee of the Red Cross to stop its anti-Israel campaign while Israeli hostages remained in Hamas captivity.
