Yana: Not an Object Anymore
She had survived exploitation, only to be crushed by the state’s paperwork.

Meet Yana
Abused as a child, Yana was forced into street prostitution. When she finally escaped the sex trade, she wasn’t met with support, she was met with 100,000 shekels in compounded government debt from COVID-19 mask fines. She had survived exploitation, only to be crushed by the state’s paperwork.
JIJ attorney Tamar Stachel Devor took Yana’s case. We argued that the State cannot penalize the vulnerable for circumstances it failed to prevent. The result? Every shekel of debt was erased. Today, Yana is a free woman with a clean slate.
