Selam: Legal Aid for Families in Crisis

Emergency protection cannot be conditioned on immigration status.

Meet Selam

Selam fled Eritrea to build a safe life in Israel as a single mother. When the October 7th war displaced her family under rocket fire, the government provided emergency housing to her neighbors—but denied Selam because of her asylum-seeker status. She and her children were left exposed in yet another war zone.

JIJ’s legal team challenged this unlawful denial. We argued that emergency protection cannot be conditioned on immigration status. We secured housing for Selam, and established a legal precedent protecting thousands of other vulnerable families from being left behind.
